Natural Destinations

For detailed information on State-owned parks and lands, look at the bottom of the page on each park listing for more menu options (such as “learn more” and “map”). Some parks offer camping reservations on-line.

Maine has the highest number of local land trusts, per capita, than any other state in the nation. Search for trusts by town or county.

Each trust can provide current information on the location and rules governing its preserves. At present, there is no comprehensive directory to properties owned by local land trusts in Maine (although several regional guides exist–see the Useful Publications page under Resources.)

For more detailed information on protected natural lands that are accessible for hiking and camping, please review the guidebooks listed in the Useful Publications pages of this Resources section.

For a great overview of walks and hikes in the Greater Augusta/Kennebec County area, look at Andrea Lani’s “Capital Walks."
